Hello to all who have found this page! Loaves and Love is an online, live class that teaches the art and science of making sourdough and helping your community at the same time.
Sourdough is simply the art of cultivating wild yeast that is already living amongst flour, instead of relying on those little packets of commercial yeast to get bread to rise. It makes bread incredibly delicious, and also very inexpensive. (A 30-ounce loaf of sourdough from a bakery will set you back $8 or more in our area; after this class, you'll be making your own for less than $2 per loaf.)
In this class, we'll learn what's really going on when you bake with a sourdough starter. You'll learn:
We are going to have an amazing time together learning how to make wonderful bread for your family and your community.
Your instructor: Me! I am a mom and a biochemistry-trained instructor and speaker. I write about science for national magazines when I'm not at home raising our kindergarten-age son (whose artwork you may have seen if you received a Loaves & Love gift sourdough during December 2020). I also work at an immunology lab at the Fred Hutch, helping an amazing team of scientists who are working tirelessly to discover next-generation cures for cancer.

- How to make a sourdough starter from scratch, and how to take care of it once it is alive and bubbly.
- The science of sourdough: what are those little yeast creatures eating, and why does it make bread taste so good?
- How to make a foolproof sourdough loaf every time.
- How to experiment with your master recipe once you've gotten the hang of sourdough baking.
- How to help give back to our community with your baking gifts.
- How to create wonderful, healthy bread for your family.
- How to do all of this if you're in a gluten-free home (yes, it can be done!).
